The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation announced that, as a result of a partnership with the Department of Defense National Defense Education Programs (NDEP), Mrs. Peggy Goldwater Clay, Chair of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation’s Board of Trustees, announced that the number of Goldwater scholarships awarded for the 2021-2022 academic year has been increased to 409 collegians.

From an expected pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, 1256 natural science, engineering, and mathematics students were nominated by 438 academic institutions to compete for the 2021 Goldwater awards. The Scholars are comprised of 198 men and 206 women, with the vast majority intending to pursue a Ph.D. as their ultimate degree goal, according to the students who responded. Fifty-one Scholars are mathematics and computer science majors, 290 are natural science majors, and 68 are engineering majors, according to the National Science Foundation. Many of the Scholars have had their research published in prestigious professional publications and have given presentations at professional society conferences as a result of their work.
Eligibility
- Be a fully-time student or junior graduate at an accredited 2- or 4-year higher education institution during the academic year 2020-2021.
- Intend to conduct a science, mathematics, or engineering research career
- Have a collegiate average of at least 3.00 grades on a scale of 4.00.
- Be a U.S. citizen from 50 states or District of Columbia; a United States citizen for students appointed to Puerto Rico institutions, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands Commonwealth; or a permanent resident.
- A permanent resident has to send a photocopy of the Green Card or his Permanent Resident Card.
